Florence Film Festival

The festival, Archeofilm Firenze, as the name suggests concentrated on films covering archeology. There were two screens: one, a larger room dedicated to films in Italian and a smaller one, showing films in foreign languages. This section of the festival was called Original Sounds and our film was included in this section.

The film was shown on the afternoon of the first day of the festival and I was asked to introduce the film and take questions at the end. There was a small but attentive audience for the showing and I was thrilled to have been part of such an event.

I spent a few days at the festival watching the other films. I was fascinated at the spread of styles and subject. My favorite film was; a French film by Jacques Plaisant “Les ferries Champollion, dans le secret deshieroglyphs” about the Champollion brothers who deciphered the Egyptian hieroglyphs 200 years ago. I also enjoyed an Italian film by Daniel Cini“ Ilcorpo e il nome: Gli ingnoti delle Fosse Ardeatine”. This film covered the long search to discover the names of the victims of an atrocity carried about by the Nazis in Rome in 1944.

I found the festival enjoyable but also very informative. I was able to swap ideas with other film makers and as a result learned lessons which we will incorporate in our next film. My most important lesson was that a good story is essential to make a film enjoyable and engaging. Great photography and drone shots does not a movie make!
